Dear Friends & Family,
On Monday, Steve flew to Juneau to get an MRI on his shoulder and met with his Orthopedic Surgeon. His shoulder is toast but if he gets a replacement, he can only lift 15lbs for the rest of his life. He is opting to live with it. The ankle is still bothering him in one specific spot. The surgeon thinks it is exactly where he placed a “tight rope” to hold the ligament in place while it healed. He is going to have ANOTHER surgery to have it removed!
Wednesday evening, we attended a concert on our neighbors, Kay and Rick Dunning’s lawn (who are from Savage, MN) but Kay grew up here in a house in the Fort and they come back every summer for a couple of months. It was a family named, The Lack Family. https://www.thelackfamily.com/ They are SO TALENTED!!! You need to go to their website and check them out! So, Rick and Kay have them play in their lawn and they have hotdogs and hamburgers and all the accoutrements. They do a gospel selection for this particular concert because the ministerial council puts it on. SRSLY, the one daughter reminded us of Wynonna Judd and the rest were just as amazing!!! So, for a Weds. evening, we walked down the hill, met up with Dacotah and Seeley, and had a burger and listened to this amazing concert just down the hill from us!
The fair started on Thurs., but the Russell’s had other plans, so we decided to skip the fair for the evening and go to cocktails on the lawn. Friday night we went to the fair after work. They had a “wearable art” contest. It was so AMAZING!!! I can’t wait until I can be in it next year! I would love ideas from my creative friends. I was thinking about a long skirt with Sitka Roses, a top with forget-me-nots, and putting real fireweed in a hat???
Saturday, started with a parade and then we went to the fair. Beautiful day, vendors, food, entertainment. SO FUN! There was an 8th grade band that played hard rock. Y’all that know me, know that I don’t love Hard Rock but, these guys were so cute, and they had groupies!!! They were called “The Cows go Moo”! Their groupies wore cow onesies, cow hats, cow t-shirts, etc. It was so cute!!! The crowd was going CRAZY!!! And for 8th grade kids, they had some great musical chops!!! We met up with our friends, Vance and Jamie, and their friends who were visiting from Arizona, Suzy, and Peter. We hung out in the wine garden & went to the Logging competition. SO FUN!!! So, this isn’t a “Logging Competition” like I’ve been too… ever. These are local loggers who compete. Not the professional competition loggers who travel from New Zealand. I was a little disappointed, can’t lie! I’ve seen professional logging competitions and they men are MEN!!! Just sayin’!!! But these are locals that do this for a living, men, and women! So inspiring!!! We watched the axe throwing, and then something I’ve never seen where there was a team who the first person ran with a rope/cable and jumped over all kinds of monster logs and had to put a chink around the last log and then run back over the logs, tapped out to his partner, who then ran up the hill to wrap and huge cable around a tree, attached it to a pulley, then he ran down the hill and tapped his partner. The team that did it he fastest won. This is exactly what the do every day at work. It was CRAZY!!! We ended with watching the log rolling. The final came down to a woman against a man!!! She lost but still, she came in 2Nd over a bunch of guys!!! SO MUCH FUN!!!!
Sunday, we went out to Vance and Jamie’s and went out on their boat on Chilkoot lake, it is SO BEAUTIFUL!! The water is turquois, because of the glacial salt/minerals in the water. We were looking for spawning salmon but didn’t see any. Then we met them at the dock so we could ride with them while they set a skate. It was super fun and interesting. Sunday. We hosted a REAL Birthday party for Seeley on her REAL birthday. We invited Vance & Jamie, Suzy & Peter (who was also celebrating his Birthday) & Seeley’s Rents-LOL!!! We had Caipirinha’s, pao de queijo, moqueca, salad with basil dressing & a passion fruit flan. It was a great time and we really enjoyed Suzy and Peter! Suzy is Jamie’s best friend. They met somewhere in Arizona and have been besties ever since. It was a VERY FULL week and exhausting as usual, but SO MUCH FUN!!!
Our social calendar had been CRAZY, and we don’t know anyone!!! We love it in Haines!!! Who knew?? I am still being “Stephanie” or Glamma or Glamy, and it seems nobody really cares.
They are very accepting. I had a guy in the store tonight tell me He liked my jeans/pants. He thought they were very cool. There is a nurse who comes downstairs when she is working to see what I am wearing. She told Dacotah that she loved watching my wardrobe and she was pretty sure I hadn’t worn the same thing since I started. I have, I think she was just off on those days-LOL. I was a little worried that I would have a hard time being “me” but these people, even though they don’t care for the most part what they look like, accept & appreciate me. I think I’m one of less than 10 women that I’ve seen wear makeup. Isn’t that crazy for my lower 48 friends??? My Water Lilies told me that I had to be me, and I shouldn’t try to be Alaska casual, which I haven’t. I get some compliments every once and a while, probs more than I get weird looks. I think they think I’m from a cruise ship. LOL!!
BTW-Who is Woofie that is always the first to “like” the blog???
Kiss, Kiss,
Stephanie
