The lilacs and the wild iris are in bloom! We worked all week and on Weds. I flew to Juneau for work. It was a beautiful morning for a flight! I got some beautiful pictures. I trained at Juneau SEARHC and learned how to prick someone’s finger and get a lipid panel, blood glucose and hemoglobin A1C! We had several WISEWOMAN patients, so I got to see how to do motivational interviewing and health educating. My boss was there also, and she had a car so we could go out for lunch and dinner. Weds. for lunch we all (the team from Juneau) went to a really good Mexican restaurant near Costco and then for dinner Pam and I went downtown. Dacotah wanted me to get some rhubarb gin and tonics that are seasonal, from a local distillery. Pam and I had a fancy cocktail and then we were looking for somewhere to eat and walked past a really nice gift shop. We found some BEAUTIFUL caribou pelts and I bought one!!! I gave it to Steve for an anniversary present. We tried a few different restaurants but ended up at the Island Pub on Douglas Island. Pam and split a steak sandwich with a lemon orzo salad and added a Caesar salad also-YUM!!! Thurs., we went to a local sandwich shop for lunch that was HOPPING!!! Thurs. night my boss and I got a pedicure. Steve said, “I’ve NEVER gotten a pedicure with my boss”) LOL! Thurs. night we found a Chinese restaurant that was good. I flew back on Friday after work and there were only 2 other passengers. One got to sit next to the pilot and when we were getting close to Haines, I noticed that he was flying the plane!!! Only in Alaska!
Saturday, Steve, Dacotah and I volunteered to help serve at the Fisherman’s BBQ. There was a bicycle race from Haines Junction, Canada to Haines, AK. 148 miles through a mountain pass. Some people did it in teams, but many did it all alone! The finish line was right in front of our house, so we heard people cheering and ringing cow bells. The first finisher came in around 2pm, there were still people coming in at 10pm. The Fisherman’s BBQ is held at the fair grounds and the bikers get a ticket along with their registration. Everyone eats for FREE but there is a suggested donation of $10. The menu was chips, grilled salmon, deep fried halibut, black bean and corn salad, rolls and brownies. Pretty good for $!0!!! It was fun and we met people from all over. One couple I talked to sold their home 4 yrs ago and bought a boat. They have been living on it and traveling the world ever since.
On Sunday we went to Skagway with Jamie, Vance, Dacotah & Seeley. Jamie and Vance got a new boat, so we just went for a ride. It takes about 45 minutes to get there. We walked around and shopped. I got an Native Alaskan mask to go with the caribou hide-I think it looks great on the wall in our living room! We also had a soft serve ice cream cone (something you can’t get in Haines) which was delicious. We went to a local Brewery for lunch and I had a rhubarberita-YUM! Then we boated back home. It was probably the prettiest/warmest day we’ve had so far and it almost felt like we were on a MN lake except much bigger with snow covered mountains on either side. We returned home to get ready for the work week
Steve is getting around much better and is doing physical therapy twice a week. I am catching on at work, which is a BIG RELIEF! Seeley recognizes us and smiles and waves when we see her.
Life is Good!
Kiss, Kiss,
Stephanie
