Our first week in Haines was BEAUTIFUL!! The weather was fantastic, and we got to see Seeley every day. We went directly to the post office to set up our PO box and then to the bank to set up local accounts. We were waiting for the DMV until our car arrived. We bought some groceries at the grocery store (sticker shock!!!) We went to the Rusty Compass for lunch one day and had 3 sandwiches with a cup of soup-$60!
We are loving our view and Steve gets up at 6:30 and walks around town or down to the pier. He just LOVES it! He has been working and I have been busy helping with Seeley, going for walks with Dacotah and Lego, arranging our apartment. It is a two bedroom, one bath, with a kitchen, dining area, island, living room & a large foyer that Steve can use as an office and put his treadmill desk in it. We really like the apartment, it is very functional and we have such a beautiful view from the living room. We can watch the cruise ships come and go and the whales.
Our social schedule has been crazy! Dacotah and Travis took us out for dinner one night, the landlords (Annette and Sam) had us over for cocktails another night, we were going to go to an evening of storytelling at the Chilkat Center for the Arts but were just too tired. On Friday night we babysat Seeley while D & T went to a marriage class at their church. We agreed to watch her on Friday night until they are done with this class
On Saturday we drove to the Lutek Inlet where Jamie & Vance (friends of D & T and now friends of ours) live. They were coming home from Whitehorse, Canada so they weren’t home but we went for a lovely 4 mile walk along the Chilkoot river and up to Chilkoot Lake. The water is turquoise from the glacial sediment and it is absolutely stunning. The lake still had ice on it but you could see the color. The first time we came to Haines in 2019, we kayaked on the lake and saw the salmon spawning.
It is almost time for the “hooligan run”! No, it is not a marathon. Hooligan is a type of fish that appear every spring and bring in the sea lions which then bring in the whales. We’ve heard that hooligan is not very good to eat but they are a very oily fish and the natives used to get oil from them to use like kerosene in a lantern. We did see sea lions in the inlet.
On Sunday we were invited to D & T’s for brunch with the neighbors, the McPhetres (Shannon, Sam and their daughter, Emily.) Steve made honey chipotle salmon bowls-YUM!!! It was an exhausting, exhilarating week but we are elated to be in Haines!
